The Plot: Haunted by his fuckup that caused a mining-related massacre that took place on Valentine’s Day a decade ago, Tom (Jensen Ackles) returns to his hometown to find some closure. But no sooner does he arrive than a pickax-wielding madman begins a new bloody killing spree. Now, many suspect that the original murderous miner once thought killed, has returned to claim his final victims — including Tom. Patrick Lussier directs this 3-D remake of the 1981 horror classic.
The music was standard for a modern horror flick for the most part. It was written to go along with every scene in the movie and increase tension and drama. It did have a ton of old school scare tactics that were included into its score where the music would make a loud shriek when they wanted to get a scare, kinda cheep but fun.
The cinematography was obviously geared for the 3-D effects. This means plenty of shit flying at the screen and stuff like that. I really liked the lighting…it felt more old school in parts where they kept things dark. You don’t see that kind of stuff much anymore, just really well lit sets. Everything was very vivid as well. My only problem was that it got blurry during action scenes due to the 3-D effects.
The acting was ok, nothing great. This is typical for this type of movie I understand…so I was able to look beyond it and focus more on the main reason I was there: Horror in 3-D. I did like how the old Sheriff was played by Tom Atkins, he’s great in horror films.
The effects blew my mind. I have to say…I haven’t been to a 3-D movie in the theater since Metalstorm: The Destruction of Jared-Syn (1983) and it’s been a long fucking time since that shit. Before only some things were 3-D, most of the movie was normal, until something popped out at you. Watching this movie, everything was 3-D…The actors, the set, the gore…it was really amazing to watch. The gore was pretty over the top at parts, which I loved!
Overall the movie was great. Plenty of action and storyline to keep you guessing…well, for half the time at least. I do think that without the 3-D effects this movie would probably be pretty standard, and not nearly as great as it was.
