The Plot: A scientific exploration in search of a new energy source gets all jacked up and unleashes a horde of powerful sperm-like demons who begin possessing human bodies thus fucking up civilization. Close friends Akira devilman-live-action-1-akira-fudo(Hisato Izaki) and Ryo (Yusuke Izaki) wind up on opposing sides of this epic shit storm. Akira’s inner strength allows him to maintain his identity and fight for good, but the little bit of good that Ryo had is completely overtaken by Satan himself.

The music was really strange during the whole movie. Some scenes were done by an orchestra, and drums, while others had this creepy piano music that seemed like it was right out of the exorcist. It fit at parts but not at all times. I’m not sure what they were thinking while writing this score.

devilman-silene-demon-angelThe cinematography was hard to judge. Any scene without special effects was typical fare for most movies with a decent budget like this. Then they get into all types of CGI’ed fight scenes, some of which looked like they were from the old “Altered Beast” video game that came with the Sega Genesis system back in the day. The editing was crazy…the story kept jumping around so much they must have went berserk on the celluloid with a Katana sword. I was really hoping for better going into this movie.

The acting was well done in my opinion. The main characters all played there roles very well and convincingly. Yusuke Izaki had the crazy-evil bastard role down pat. Bob Sapp doing a cameo as an anchorman on the news was pretty devilman-live-action-satan-yusuke-izakiawesome, but his acting was completely fucking horrendous. He needs to stick with knockin’ heads in.

The effects were hard to judge in this movie. They went back and forth, from good to bad..mostly bad. Mainly the action scenes were mostly made up of really horrible CGI, and then they would switch it up to this really great makeup work for the steady shots. I’m not sure why they did this…maybe the budget or something. If they focused more on making every scene with demons in them look good this movie it would definitely be up towards the top of the heap.

devilman-live-action-akira-fudoOverall this movie should only be watched by those who enjoy anime, more so those that like the Devilman manga. The ending felt like the writers just ran out of ideas as well as time so they just said fuck it and destroyed everything. They tried to tie way to many things into this movie that it just stopped making sense at a certain point. If you do watch it….drink a pint of rum and smoke some serious weed and you might just love it.
